SX230 is on sale on Amazon or B&H for $200 now. It is a good deal taking into account the original price.
Also, you can get a Refurbished S95 from Adorama for $250(!). S95 will allow you to grow up if you are interested in. Think about it! I don't know how zoom is really important for you. My first film camera had 50mm prime lens (fixed), so the zoom power has never been an important parameter for me in choosing a camera. But if you are planning to use Auto all the time and you are on budget, any Canon camera will do the job for you. Just define the characteristics you need and choose the model according to them and your budget. The best budget cameras are Canon A800 (no video, bu excellent IQ for the price) and Canon A1200 (fair IQ, HD video!). I don't own neither of them, but they are highly rated in various reviews.
