Re: Which 3 LENS are must haves for a Semi-Pro/Pro Photographer

I shoot TV shows, weddings and events with:

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8
Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8
Nikon 16-85 f/3.5-5.6

The Sigmas are for available light photos and are used the most. The Nikon is used for flash-on-camera coverage where I’m going to shoot everything at 5.6, plus it doubles as my rainy weather lens, and as back-up to the Sigma. Case in point: I tripped at a bride’s house this summer and a D300s with the 17-50mm went front element first into the hardwood floor. It would no longer zoom so I put it away and shot with the 16-85mm the rest of the day.

Never discount the importance of back up gear.

Two summers ago I was at the lakeshore with the bridal party when we got hot with a thunder storm. I used the 16-85 – because it is weather sealed – and got a bunch of shots of everyone running for cover. The storm passed and I used it for all the group shots. There is a small face cloth tucked into my camera bag to wipe off the residue of just such an incident. And from coffee spills.

I own more lenses, but those are the three I am always packing.
