Car interior light trails

I am fairly new to Strobist stuff. I have recently seen shots in the uk s "Advanced Photographer" magazine that I want to emulate. The shot is taken from between the front seats of a car with a wide angle lens showing the dash board and the night sky thru the windscreen. its a 8 sec exposure of trailing lights and colours.

Everything is sharp inside the car . I presume the photographer is using rear sync flash.

In my attempts to do the same i have secured my camera on a tripod with bungee cords holding it tight. I drive the car slowly past the scenes. The shots are great outside the car but the interior is fuzzy and not sharp.

How do i perfect this? I would have thought the flash would have frozen the interior? Where can i find people who have done this successfully?

Thanks for your time..Andy
