I 2nd the Acratech GP ($400). Light, perfect for landscapes. Having used a variety of heads for landscapes I find a ball head the easiest by far. Not as precise as a geared head such as the Manfrotto you mentioned, but much lighter. The built-in levels in most mid-high range heads will make it easy to get the positioning right for landscapes. If you were doing tons of macro work a geared head would be a good idea.
