What is the best 77mm UV filter?

Hi there,

I have been testing the Tokina 28-70 Pro SV for 2 weeks. I got two lenses, first one with front focusing so I returned it. The second one does have front focusing about 2cm, but the target is within focus range so I accept it.

Later on, when I did the real world testing, I found there are severe chromatic aberrations all over the picture. I am so disappointed! I can't figure out how this lense rated so high in photonet and photozone. This lense looks like a piece of junk, I want to sell it right away(I can't return it since it has passed 2 weeks since I received it).

I then removed the protecting filter, took some shots, checked the pictures, and guess what? there's no chromatic aberrations! I put it on, there comes chromatic aberrations! With filter on, I also found that there are severe glare when pointed toward sun. It is really annoying! The filter I use is HOYA HMC SUPER.

I need your advise about this- Do I need a filter(for protective)? If so, what is the best filter that is affordable?

I've owned all the best. The one least prone to add flare is the Hoya Super HMC Pro1 (0) UV. The best prices for them is at Delta Intl. (877)782-9840..........

I just checked B&H, Pro1 costs about twice the price of non-pro1!

Is there anyone ever use HOYA Circular Polarizer / UV Haze (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter - Ultra Thin?

How does it compared to Pro1?

Or if someone can provide a link to the testing site for these filters would be very helpful. Thanks.

Well, you did ask what is the best. Also, Delta has much better prices than B&H on Hoya filters.

The Hoya SMC filters are reputed to be as good as anything on the planet regardless of cost. Try The Filter Connection for good prices.

The most flare resistant filter is no filter. Adding extra layers in front will never improve your picture, and MAY degrade a little. But if you used quality filters, this degradation will hardly be noticable except for some rare situations.

I've used Heliopan multi-coated, B+W single coated and Hoya Super HMC filters. My favourite has been the Heliopan from a construction and toughness point of view. Believe me, I've inadvertently tested this before. The Hoya were good at the beginning, but after time, the perimeter became a different colour from the centre. I think you get what you pay for.

Whatever you do though, get the multi-coated ones.

If you're going to test a lens you really should not add any unknown variables such as filters. However, your test shows that all the agonizing on this forum over which high quality filter to use is justified.

Hi!

I got the same lens a couple of days ago and it shows terrible chromatic aberration @ 28 mm and I never used any filters!!!

It's also soft at 70 mm, tends to hunt for focus and when it does the image in the viewfinder moves horizontally from side to side (!).

I, too, simply cannot believe how this lens got its good rating in the German "Photo Magazin".

I will return it tomorrow and recommend to anyone to stay well clear of this lens!

As a satisfied DI customer, I second Lee's advice. The HMC Pro 1 is a stellar thin filter which DI sells for 40% less than B&H. They are on all my lenses
