When the SX series first came out discussions / questions about just jamming a filter directly onto the front were pretty common, because the design lent itself to forcing and it seemed to work. But once the adapters came out that discussion ended. A competent salesman wouldn't have sold a filter without an adapter.

Remember too, that in addition to a UV "protection" filter the adapter will work with truly useful filters, especially a polarizer, which is great for getting blue sky and dealing with glare and reflection on water surfaces, a must-have for many outdoors shots.
