I ended up buying a TS10, for under $150. Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and decent enough image quality (not quite TS3/TX10 IQ though, but half the price, and better than her current cheap compact).

Thank you for all the input, it was much appreciated! I think she'll really enjoy it, and it should take a beating. She'll likely end up with my XZ-1 in a couple of years, as happened with my S90 and my son.

On the film front, I also have 2 K1000's here that they can play with if the film bug takes them, they just aren't very practical for a small child to take in a bag or pocket with them.
