Re: G9 or A650IS?

I have the G9 and G11, and prefer the G11 with the swivel LCD, and better high ISO performance. The A650 was interesting to me at the time I purchased the G9, because I also own the A620. However, the G9 has a hot shoe for external flash, shoots native RAW (A650 can shoot RAW with CHDK), external setting of ISO, and smaller size (slightly). Some found the G9 ergonomics uncomfortable without a real grip for the right hand, but I have never found it to be a problem.

The A650 has a swivel LCD, and I have discovered I prefer a swivel screen over a fixed screen. The G9 has a 3" screen, while the A650 is 2.5". I like the larger screen, but it's difficult to see in bright lighting. A swivel LCD lets you reposition the screen for better bright light viewing, as well as better viewing in many awkward positions.

I find the hot shoe is the biggest factor for me. I like using my 430EX II flash off camera, and in high sync mode with the G9 (and G11). If you don't care about using a flash connected to the camera, then the A650 may be better for you. You can use external slave flashes triggered by the built-in flash, but you have no control through the camera.

You may also want to use the site below to view images from each camera. Use g9 for one Search, and a650 for another. It's difficult to tell the differences. Also, the photographer will the factor in nearly all cases.
