Yes, you can hook an external USB drive to your existing Time Capsule, but you may not be happy with the results.

The Time Capsule is not a particularly fast file server. It's rather slow. I would find editing lots of images on it to be rather painful.

You can buy fast network disks. Once you do, your network speed will be the limiting factor. Wireless, or Fast Ethernet will be noticeably slower than an attached USB drive.

For best results, use a good network disk drive, and run a Gig-Ethernet cable to the drive, and each of your MacBooks.
