IMO, I don't think you'll see much improvement with better auto exposure if you're using evaluative metering. I hate evaluative mode because it's hard to predict what the camera will do. If you take several pictures of the same scene, but framed slightly different, you could get different exposures.

I prefer the consistent exposures of center weighted metering. Then I can simply compensate the EV as I know (minus for darker scene, plus for brighter scene). Or just go manual.

One benefit for newer bodies is the larger screen, higher resolution, increased viewing angle, better viewing in sunlight may help you see that the exposure is not good, so you can retake the photo on the spot.
