Powershot G11 MACROS of Meteoric Origin

I'm just finishing a book on meteorite collecting and have shot a number of the photographs with the Canon Poweshot G11. I have other cameras to use for this job including other Powershots and DSLRs but I get consistently clear pictures from the G11 when it comes to macros of small objects close to the lens.

Click on an image to see just how much detail was captured. - I'd suggest having a closer look at the first image at full size (even the details between the texture of my finger prints was captured) .... and these image have all been reduced to 1024 pixels wide so the originals retail much more detail.

Some of the pictures that I was happy with have been added below with captions.

Most were shot against backlit white paper with some contrast enhancements to eliminate the backgrounds. Shot in P mode, ISO 80 & 400 and cropped in CS2 which means no EXIF details are retained. External Flash (an old EX420 Speedlite) was used with the Bounce Flash method for all but the top two images.

(ABOVE) Moldavite from the Czech Republic - a type of Tektite or meteoric related molten impact glass from 28.5 million years ago. This piece is one of the lesser/lower grade specimens. (No Flash)

(ABOVE) This 2 inch long Gem-Grade Moldavite specimen was shot against backlit white paper. (No Flash)

(ABOVE) This Moldavite specimen is next to a gemstone cut from the same material. You can see several minute air bubbles in the gem. The gem is just 10mm in diameter.

(ABOVE) Indochinite Tektite - probably the most common type of tektite with over 10 tons of these being found so far. This one has a smooth matt surface with great details.

(ABOVE) Indochinite Tektite - This one has a shiny surface with evidence of the molten nature of the stone visible in the rippled glass texture. Age is 700,000 years. Specimen is 4 inches long.

(ABOVE) 'Oriented' Sikhote-Alin meteorite — plenty of flowlines and "rollover lips" where the iron melted during the fall to earth and ran back against the surface of the metal.

(ABOVE) Polished NANTAN meteorite slice with a 1cm scale cube for reference. (not acid etched)

(ABOVE) Polished and Acid-Etched NANTAN meteorite partial slice with a 1cm scale cube for reference. The etching reveal the iron crystals inside. It takes millions of years for the crystals to grow this long which is evidence of the extraterrestrial origins of the iron.
