Attaching closeup lens

I'm new to the dSlr world and would like some advice.

I used to shoot macros with a Sony H series camera coupled with a Sony M3358 closeup lens - which at 3.3 diopters sits somewhere between the Canon 250d and 500d closeups.

I've attached my M3358 to the EF-S 18-55mm IS (kit) lens of my 450D. That allows me to bring the subject closer (than by using just the EF-S alone). So the subject appears a bit larger. But not anywhere near the magnification I was used to with my old H series zoomed in to 432 mm (35mm equivalent).

Is the 55mm limit of my kit lens the issue here? Would a lens with more focal length give more magnification? I've also read about using an extension tube. Might one of those help?

And help in this matter would be appreciated.

Dave
