Lighting the background

Usually, I shoot against white seamless or stretched white muslin, and light it with two strobes to make sure the results are white. Occasionally, I'll turn down those strobes (Einsteins, these days) to achieve a gray background.

The question is, what do I do to achieve an intensely colored background, say, lit with dark blue gels through 20-degree grid spots? Should I be using black seamless? Clearly, the white doesn't cut it.
