The problem is probably..

You are using an old version of Word probably from Office 2004?

If so it is PPC code that ran under an emulation program called Rosetta in Leopard, problem is that emulation is 32bit only as far as I know and certainly not supported in the 64bit Lion.

So when you upgrade to Lion all PPC coded Apps (anything before 2005-06) will not work Appleworks, old versions of Photoshop etc.

If you don't want or can't afford to buy MS Office 2011 you could use the free textedit app to open .doc files, it will even open a Appleworks .cwk file from the 1990's although you may have to chop out some of the strange characters and formatting, you should be able to recover the plain text.
