I'm thinking they'll ditch the traditional PDAF, just put in a semi-silvered mirror which allows the image sensor AF to operate when the mirror's down. Such mirror would be lighter and mechanically much simpler than one with the traditional submirror, which would make for a higher frame rate. It would also allow the greater spread of focus points. The Nikon image sensor PDAF patents show varied arrays of AF points and microlens configurations, including slow and fast lens, linear, cross and diagonal cross (not easily done with traditional AF) configurations. I think a whole load of this, and the D3s and 1 sensor performance comes for the fact that Nikon has fantastic microlens capability. It was developed for the telecommunications industry, but is serving them well for sensors.
