EP1 Blinking Red IS-1 indicator

On a recent backpacking trip with my (formerly) trusty EP1 I was alarmed to see a blinking red IS-1 indicator on the right side of the screen. I just checked the manual and this is what they have to say about that:

"If the image stabilizer icon blinks red on the monitor, it indicates a failure of the image stabilizer function... Consult your Olympus Authorized Service Center."

Unfortunately I'm out of warranty which means a repair will likely exceed the value of the body (~$250 I think). Anyone else have experience with this or know what might have caused it? I haven't found anything searching these forums.
