Hi Sam,

I am using the 54MZ3 with my Nikon Coolpix 950. I am in the process of buying either a D7Hi or a Nikon E5700. Whatever I choose I will still be able to use the 54MZ3. I just have to buy the appropriate SCA adapter.
The Metz website has a SCA adapter selection tool:

http://www.metz.de/1_metz_2000/m_pages_english/main_index_e.php3?link=4&#8834 ;=1&linkname=mecablitz

This should point you to the proper adapter, and it shows you the supported functions.
The 54MZ3 is really a very nice piece of equipment!

Regards,
Paul
Hello Joe,

You are always so good and generous in sharing your knowledge and
experience with us. Many thanks. In fact, Metz 54MZ3 was my first
choice of flash unit for D7hi until I read about the different
versions of SCA adaptor and people (including shopkeepers) have had
problems in correctly identifying the right one to get. I have
been searching for Metz adaptor's catalogue or part number so that
I can take it to shops to check before I buy, but so far no luck
with finding the information.

The Metz website has a SCA adapter selection tool:
1) Can the 54MZ3 be used with in wireless mode with the D7i and above?

2) Is there an optical trigger built in the 64MZ3 for those of us who own a D7upg?

3) If the answer to 2 is no, then is there some kind of accessory that will enable this?

Hi,

As I already mentioned, I do not currently own a D7 or any other Minolta camera. So everything I know comes from reading specs and reviews. I do own the Metz 54MZ3, with the SCA3402 adapter for use with my Nikon CP950.

However, reading the specs of the SCA adapters on the Metz site I found the following information:

1) Wireless mode

The feature table of the SCA 3302 M3 adapter, for use with the Dimage 7 series states that the wireless TTL flash is supported both by the adapter and the flash unit. It also mentions that the camera does not support it, but apparently this table is not updated for the 7i/7Hi.

So, it seems that the wireless flash is supported with the SCA 3302 M3 and 7i/7Hi

The Metz flashes also have their own 'wireless' mode allowing multiple Metz flashes to
communicate their settings and do remote triggers.

2) I suppose you mean to use the 54MZ3 as a slave unit, triggered by the D7 internal flash?

The answer is: no, the 54MZ3 does not have a built-in optical trigger. But wih an optional adapter it can do this. See below.

3) Optical trigger adapter

Look at the specs of the SCA 3083 "digital slave adapter" this seems to do just that.

This adapter fits in the 54MZ3, replacing the SCA 3302 M3, effectively turning the 54MZ3 into a slave unit. According to the specs it will handle the pre-flash correctly. As I do not own this adapter I can't comment on how well it works with the D7.

Hope this answers your questions.

Paul

Paul, thank you very much for your very informative post. I found it really helpful and my doubts and queries on this combo are now over (at least for the time being).

Many thanks!

The BH Photo link is to the older Sigma flash unit. It is not compatible with Dimage 7x digital cameras. The new versions are designated as EF-500 Super "DG"

It is not clear what is their availability, late December or mid-January.
You will have to wait at least a month to get it.
Just spoke with the Sigma and they told me that they are not
shipping these until middle of January.
I want this flash too.
That's what I thought, but then I saw this:
