Vented Lens Hoods

I've noticed that many of the aftermarket lens hoods that have been recommended in this forum are vented. I was curious as to what, if any, advantage the vents provide. I Googled, and found that there seems to be a lot of conjecture but no definitive answer.

The most common explanation is that the vents can be useful on a rangefinder camera, where a conventional non-vented hood might block a portion of the view. If this is the case, then theoretically there is no advantage to a vented hood on an SLR or micro four thirds camera, where the photographer is viewing through the lens or directly from the camera's sensor.

Does anyone else have any idea what the benefits might be of vents on a lens hood? Humorous smartass responses welcome, as well as serious ones!
