It is way too short for football or soccer in regulation sized fields. You can get shots, but you will have to wait patiently for the action to come to you. Having said that, it is my main lens for indoor volleyball. You are right, its strength is its speed. That extra stop can get the ISO down and blur more background. I have not used the newest MKII 70-200, but the original 70-200mm f/2.8 IS auto focuses much slower than the prime. If you don't need the extra stop, the MK II zoom seems to produce good quality from the sample images I've seen.
