Things have probably changed a bit in recent years, but I switched to DSLR because I couldn't find the bird in the viewfinder, or manually focus fast enough - the camera's controls were just too clumsy for it, and the view finder too grainy.

I suspect a Micro 4/3 camera with a good electronic view finder would make me happy these days. I'm betting there are a few serious photographers with those, maybe not so many with compact cameras.
