Yes, and photography should be fun.

Also this lets you play with sharpness and contrast while ghosting over them to get a good result.

Example: about 3 stops wider DR from two exposures used in only two layers, with better sharpness and reduced flare round the lamps. Tripod of course!

That's just it. Tripod of course! not only that, but nothing should move between the images. HDR is not really connected to the sensor DR, at least not the way I'd call it "connected". It's fun but it can not replace real sensor DR, only in certain type of images.
