Understanding "price fixing"

Legally, there is a big difference between a price set forth by a manufacturer, and "price fixing".

Laws against price fixing were designed to eliminate collusion amoungst competing elements. Thus, Oil companies can't agree on a price to sell gasoline. Canon/Nikon/Sony can't set pricing together. B&H and Amazon can't talk to each other about pricing in general or on specific items.

Although an oversimplificaton of the these laws, Nikon is a free company which can determine what is best for their business, as long as they do so unilaterally.

We don't know exactly why Nikon did this, but you must believe they think it in their best interest.
