A lens with a large aperture (i.e f1.4,f1.8, f2.0 etc) is considered a fast lens as it allows you to use faster shutter speeds than those with smaller apertures. From my understanding you want a fast zoom and here are some suggestions.
Carl Zeiss 16-50mm f2.8
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
Tokina 16-50mm f2.8

These are just some amongst fast zooms at different price points and considerable replacement for your kit lens. However, if you are to consider using primes lenses which are cheap, light, sharp, fast and fun to use , do check out some of these. Check for reviews.

Sony 35mm f1.8
Sony 50mm f1.8
Sony 85mm f2.8
Tamon 60mm f2(True macro lens)

Sorry i thought the 16-50 f2.8 was a zeiss.
