300mm new vs. 300mm old

Has anyone ever compared the m43 300mm lenses with the legacy 300mm manual lenses?

I know that Canon, Olympus, Konica and probably some others made some that were around f4 or f4.5. (brighter than the digital) I never owned a lens of this length in film days. I have been wondering if one of these might be better than the M43 lenses for taking photos of things that are far away and not moving so fast that you would need autofocus to capture them.

A few years ago, we took the kids to Yellowstone and had an FZ50 and Fuji F20. These cameras were great in many circumstances, but the FZ50 was just not long enough for most of the critters we saw, since we were lazy and not in the mood for getting up early enough to see bears near the road...
