Limitations of EF100L Macro?

Hi I just got this lens last week and I am largely delighted with it.
Macro shots are sharp and clear
Portrate shots, although I have not tried this too many times yet seem fine.
I got it mainly for my wife and she was using it on her T2i.

All her shots were good except when she was taking distant landscape shots with it.

She has a few taken of a trail with trees on either side, shot at F10 for DOF using center spot focus and IS on.

All of the similar pictures taken of the landscapes are just terrible, nothing is in focus even in the center spot.
I shot with the 70-200L IS in the same conditions and had great results.

I know it would not traditionaly be used as a landscape lens but we bought it intending on using it as a 100mm prime.
Is there a problem, or is it more likely technique?
Thank you
