No, you are right about that. I recently bought the Zeiss Distagon 21mm f/2.8 because I wanted a high quality lens to shoot with shallow DOF in combination with a wide angle perspective. (I use it on a D700 full frame). With a close focus distance and the lens close to wide open, you can produce beautiful selective focus even with a wide angle lens.
