There are at least two reasons. First, the source of the pixels is different, d3s is Nikon, D7000 is Sony. Second, the pixel count of the D3s was limited by the EXPEED processor - they could have doubled the pixel count, but then it would have been a 4.5FPS camera, and wouldn't have competed in its intended marketplace.

To me, it seems to be the D/A speed that limits MP count of the D3. NOT the CPU.

I'd guess it to be very expensive to double the number of D/As from 12 to 24, while doubling processing power would be cheap.

Also, the current video implementations use line-skipping, an indication of limited sensor bandwidth.

Now, the Sony exmor enables a solution to that problem by providing D/A's on the sensor. With a digital interface from the sensor, the processor might become limiting.

Sure, the two go together, in the end doubling up ADC and processor would have added significantly to the cost. The real point is that the limit was pixel count, not pixel size.
