A little history lesson for you:

  • In 2005, Canon held their ground at 8 MP with their new EOS 30D while Nikon leapfrogged them by releasing the 10 MP Nikon D200. At the time, 10 MP was the highest resolution APS-C sensor in the market.

  • In 2007, while Canon released their new generation of SLRs in 10 MP format (40D, 400D) Nikon leapfrogged them by releasing a 12 MP models.

  • In 2008, Nikon released the 24 MP Nikon D3X. Today, that camera is 3 years old already, yet Canon still does not have an SLR with such a high megapixel count.

  • In 2011, Nikon is scheduled to release a 36 MP camera that will probably set a record for the highest megapixel count of any SLR in history.

In other words... Nikon puts just as much emphasis on megapixels as any other company.
