Mirror less & viewfinders

To be quite honest, every time I have seen the word mirrorless on this forum, my eyes have sort of glazed over. I get the idea, no mirror, so it does away with the mirror having to spring out of the way as a picture is taken and return afterwards, hence speeding things up and making trillions of exposures a second possible. But, methinks, how does the viewfinder work when there is no mirror? Do these now cameras have to all have digital viewfinders? I ask this because I have one I bought separately for my Panasonic LZ5 and to be quite honest it is rubbish. The image is so pixelated it is hardly worth using. Is this what we will have to put up with if we buy a mirrorless camera?
