You don't even need auto. P is sufficient, and then you can control exposure compensation and stop the flash from popping up on its own. Then you can also adjust the controls to however you like.

If you are still scared of P (aaah! a P! run away!), the difference between the two auto modes is mostly insignificant. However, I believe that A+ changes the picture style automatically, for example if it detects a portrait or a landscape. The green square is stuck on 'standard,' which sucks. I prefer Autumn Hues, which you can download online, but you can only use that in 'creative zone' modes so all of the 'basic zone' modes other than video are useless for me.
