Why is the Nikon 10-100mm so huge???

All Taken from BHphotovideo catalog and Wikipedia:
10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 for a 116mm^2 sensor:
filter thread:72mm(!)
dimension:7.62 x 9.40 cm

18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 VRII for a 370mm^2 sensor:
filter thread:72mm
dimension:7.62 x 9.65 cm

So for a lens that has less range, lesser max aperture, only usable on a sensor with 1/3 the area of APS-C, it's as big and as expensive of the 18-200mm VR??? Heck, the Tamron 18-270 3.5-6.3 PZD manage to has only 62mm.... I know it's a motorized zoom but so does most compacts lens and the new Pany X lens.

This thing better be absolutely PIN SHARP throughout the range to justify its size.
