Re: D300S and NEW SIGMA 120 -300 f2.8 OS ~ Amazingly Sharp

I too currently have 2 Sigma lenses. The older Sigma 10-20mm, and the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 EX. Both are extremely great lenses, and although I have not owned the Nikon 16-85 or the Nikon 17-55mm I have read popphoto review of the Sigma 18-50mm, and their conclusion was ." Its a steller performer at all aperatures, even beating the nIkon more expensive 17-55mm". Digital camera world did a comparrison group test of 5 lenses, which included the Nikon 16-85mm, and the Sigma 18-50mm, and again the Sigma came out on top.

Here is what I have to say about Long lens. Nikon cannot be beat. Just about every telephoto lens that Nikon makes is far superior to anything else on the market (IMO). I have the older Nikon 300mm F4 (not the AF-S) and I could not want a better lens. Why then would someone pay $3000. ( Ibelieve) for a Sigma 100-300mm when a Nikon 300 mm sells for about $700.00? 2.8 might be important to some people, but F4 is good enough for most of us. The only other reason that I would pay over $1200 for the AF-S is to get a Nikon teleconverter, but even then, a Kenko 1.4 works just great with mine.
