forget the 17-40, again not the best choice for crop.

In terms of 17-55 vs tamron, the sharpness and color on the tamron is comparable to the canon, ofc you miss the IS (i assume you are talking about the non-vc version). But at 1/3 of the price, I won't be complaining

Another option is sigma 17-50 OS, it's the next best thing after canon as it has HSM and OS.

I guess it's a case of canon vs 3rd party lens, some people would like to stick with 1st party while others prefer best bang for buck.
