Coming late to this thread, but wanted to say I, too, prefer the 24mm shot you did.

"Rules" ("must use portrait lens to shoot people) are meant to be broken. The shot you did with the 24 gives some sense of his environment. Nice job!

As for the primes/zooms, I've always been a "they are just tools" - I have the complete set of F/2.8 pro zooms and a bunch of primes in the same range (24/1.4, 35/1.4, 60/2.8G, 105/2, 200/2, couple of 50's as well), and it's just whichever works for the job. Shoot a slot canyon where it's tight and narrow, and the 24-70 beats the other lenses due to flexibility while maintaining excellent image quality. Have time and space to change and to wander, I'll bring out the 24 or 35 prime if I feel like it.

(BTW, I think once you tried the 35/1.4G you'd give up your 50 in about, oh, 1 second. It's just a lens that lives in a different zip code, quality wise)
