You are incorrect.

These phones have a real GPS reciever. They can make a fix more quickly with assisted GPS, which includes downloading some data on GPS satellite orbits from the cell nework. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS )

iPhones also can make use of the Wi-Fi positioning system ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Positioning_System ).

However, GPS-enabled phones, including the iPhone, remain completely capable of getting a GPS fix without any assistance from the cellular network ... it just takes longer for one to get your first fix.

For photo geotagging, you're getting a fix every few seconds, so it really doesn't have any impact.
