Nikon's wide open infinity focus MTF for the the 1.8 D & G and the 1.4 D & G are at are available from Nikon at http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/list.htm#single-focal

The 10 lpm is a good indicator or sharpness and the 30 lpm is a good indicator of resolution.

Camera makers are unlikely to publish MTF which is worse than the lens delivers so this source is a reliable indicator of what any of the 4 Nikon lenses should deliver.
Canon reckon above 60 is satisfactory and above 80 is excellent.

None of Nikon's 4 options (or most other makers f1.4 and f1.8 lenses) deliver 60% in the frame corners on the right hand side of the charts.

So - do you accept you cannot get superior corner to corner quality with 50mm f1.4 of f1.8 lenses - or do you stop down a couple of stops?

With decent equipment, when looking for excuses, usually you won't be able to blame anyone but yourself.
