Is Windows 7 vastly more secure than XP?

Truth, or Microsoft propaganda?

Study done in 2010. Although much improved, W7-32's 3.8 infections per 1000 computers (annually?) still seems high. Also W7 infections were on an uptrend, so perhaps the study merely reflected fewer W7 systems in the field, making a less interesting target for hackers.

Also, what are best practices for configuring UAC so as to strike a balance between avoiding bothersome pop-ups and actual enhanced security? Microsoft has a 2009 writeup about it - is theirs still the best approach?
