Re: 18-55m+55-250mKits or Tamron 18-270m?

I just bought the Tammy PZD version as a trekking/hiking lens. I have done some comparison against the 70-300 IS USM, 18-55 IS, 15-85 IS with my 550D.

My findings:

In range between 18-55 it outperforms the standard lens. The 15-85 is better when looking at 100% crops, especial in the corners. But not much.

At the tele end the Tammy is quite sharp in center, especial when stopping down to f8. About same as 70-300 or a tad less. Little bit less contrasty. Not sharp in corners at 270mm. Build quality and feel: Better than 18-55 and 70-300. about same or even a little bit better than 15-85mm. Silent, but not very fast focus. VC silent and about same or little bit worse than 70-300 and 15-85mm.

Size and weight: Amazing!. Even smaller/lighter than the 15-85! Other issues: focal length is much shorter than 270mm when focus less than 10m. (compared to the 70-300mm).

Attached with 550/600D its an amazing combo for lightweight trekking/hiking. Even center crops at 270mm is quite good in case you see some wildlife.
For general shooting, unless you need the tele end, I would go for the 15-85.

To illustrate the amazing focal range of the 18-270 combined with a high density camera (18 mb APS-C) look at this:

What you see on top is a 100% center crop (wide open) when the lens is combined with a 1.4 TC (Kenko Pro 300). The red arrow points to the same house using the wide 18mm end of the lens (without TC)
