Yes this

This is the proper way to do it. You want to balance the flash with the ambient light. Gel the flash and then do a custom white balance off a white item in the light you want to shoot in. This will give you a nice looking photo with proper white balance. You don't want to make the flash do the work of trying to light everything up. That's not what it's for normally unless you are shooting in the studio.
