In search of a nice, bright wider angle zoom. For the old D20, we've got the stellar Canon 10-22mm lens. We don't necessarily need that wide (although it's nice), but certainly something wider than the 18mm ( 28mm effective) has to offer.

You've got quite a lot of choices. The following are generally well-regarded:

Sigma 8-16 f/4.5-5.6 ($700)
Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 ($480)
Nikkor 10-24 f/3.5-4.5 ($900)
Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 ($660)
Nikkor 12-24 f/4 ($1170)
Tokina 12-24 f/4 ($400/$550, no motor/motor)
Nikkor 16-35 f/4 VR ($1140)

My opinion: 8mm is way too wide to be useful for most things, and 16mm is still wide enough that you'll need to switch lenses if you want anything resembling a non-ultra-wide shot. So for me, the Sigma 8-16 and Tokina 11-16 are out of the question. 10mm is wide enough to get practically anything you need in a shot and to get very exaggerated perspective. The question is whether the 10mm of the Sigma 10-20 is worth its lack of speed and range at the long end, and whether the wide range of the Nikkor 10-24 is worth what the lens costs. 12mm is still wide enough to get a lot in a shot if in cramped spaces and to exaggerate perspective. I own the older Tokina 12-24 without the AF motor and love it, especially for indoor use. I wouldn't even consider the Nikkor 12-24 at this point because of its price. The Nikkor 16-35 is a non-DX lens, but I put it in the list, anyway. 16mm is still plenty wide, 35mm on the long end is nice, and VR is useful. I bought the Tokina 12-24 three years ago, and even with the new options for DX ultra-wide, I'd probably choose it again. It's the least flashy of all the lenses, but it's got a great range, isn't too slow, is a great value (especially the no motor version), and the build quality is better than the consumer Nikkors.
