That's quite good. I like your picture. I agree about background interference. If I can't get a smooth background, often I like maximum depth of field, so that everything is in focus. It's quite easy to do by controlling the focal length and aperture. Most of the time, I have everything in focus. It's just my style. But if I naturally capture something like I see in your photo, the background might be a body of water with the person in front. Then I don't have the distracting background elements.
