I am in the market for an Android tablet, and would like hear how people are transfering files from a D700 without the use of another computer. Can I use a USB dongle and plug the D700 right into it? Would I need to use a card reader?

Thanks,
Mark

At this point there is no drivers for card readers or camera connections to the Android system. Though the new Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet has a full size USB connection which is interesting. When it hits the streets we sill see :)

The Motorola xoomuses the Motorola USB dongle to access the files on the camera.

I use my D7000 with an Eye-fi card and my Acer A500 tablet for journalism work.

Because of this, I left my D700 in my bag and shot a wedding with my D7000 last week.

I am ready to give up FF for people photography (almost).

Because of what? I use my D300S and D3 with an EyeFi card and an htc Flyer... I'll be uploading pictures to Flickr live at track league this evening.

I think that's everything!

My D700 will transfer .jpg direct to a PC running win XP, but not the .nef . For that I need Nikon Transfer. Will your iPAD 2 collect .nef without additional software?

Eye-fi tranfers Nefs but only on an SD card camera.

My D700 uses compact flash which Eye-fi does not.

To benefit from wireless transfers I decided to use my D7000 instead of my D700.

I assumed you would know the D700 uses CF and Eye-fi doesn't.
I will be more precise next time.

I think Guy is using a compact flash adapter for SD cards with his D3. Such things do exist (and work, although at shorter ranges). I think he was suggesting that the ability to use an Eye-fi card does not mean you have to give up FF. But I believe what he didn't take into account is that the D700 does not take compact flash Type II cards, which the D3 does. The Type II slots are what is needed by the CF/SD card adapters.

Yes.

Yes - imports both JPG and NEF images that are on CF card. Sorry for late response - haven't been in forum last day or so.

When reviewing photos, iPad displays ONE image (rather than one for JPG and one for NEF) and tags it as JPG + NEF.

Hadn't checked this before - but going to My Computer (Windows 7) and clicking the iPad, you get an Internal Storage directory. The imported files for both JPG and NEF are there in their original size & glory. FWIW.

I'll be using to save pics when traveling for safety until I get home & transfer to desktop computer from iPad (& still keep on CF chip until safely recorded on desktop computer.) Like to look at pics on iPad when traveling so see what I'm doing good (or bad!) iPad tucks nicely in computer bag.

Given that I had already said that I use Eye-Fi in the D300S and the D3 I would have thought it was obvious that I knew that EyeFi wasn't available in CF (and I've pointed out the stupidity of that to them).

I had forgotten - if indeed, I ever knew - that the D700 doesn't have a full CF slot, which is a real shame. The EyeFi works very nearly as well in the D3 with an adapter as it does in the D300S.

The lack of a Type I SDHC adapter is a real shame (there are standard SD adapters). I guess that's one more tiny, incremental reason to buy the pro bodies rather than the prosumer ones.

I have used a D300 and a ASUS Transformer with its keyboard base.
(I have used IPAD & XOOM)
Love it.
Features I like for photography:
TFT screen - Stable colors with angles
It can display the original JPEGs. (Importing into the ipad downsampled)
The keyboard/base has 2 usb connectors & a compact flash reader.
I can transfer files to and from the device.
The keyboard allow me to put it at any angle
I want or take it off and walk around with it.

Things I would like (There might be software out there for it)
Basic Raw processing
Crop tool.
More sophisticated import options.
