Athough I agree with JC1306 about the 70-200 VRI being first choise, for sports only the VRI is not neccessary. Given the fact that the old 70-200 HSMII version from Sigma is still sold new here, I would seriously suggest trying the old non-OS version, given the price difference. But if you are willing the to pay the price of a new Sigma with OS, I would go for a VRI second hand in stead !.

I do agree about the 100-300 in general, but the problem is that it's difficult to get, and not wide enough depending on the sports. Personally, I could even use a 400 mm in hockey and soccer.....

I currently use a 70-200 VRI and adding a convertor to it (probably a TC 1.7) is definitely on my mind. But first I'm awaiting the arrival of new DX bodies , their number MP'and how far the option crop goes. If I upgrade I might not need the TC that much, e.g. if a 24 MP DX delivers the quality.
