Hi all,

Since the disaster in Japan, many models are slow in arriving to market. Nikon USA is offering D7000 refurbuished for the same price as most authorized dealers would ask.

Is a refurb basically 'like new? Do they carry a 'new' warranty? Would you buy one?

I purchased a re-furbed D50 probably 3-4 years ago from Cameta Camera. These supposedly were demo models that were pulled from stores when new models came out. It came with like a 90 day warranty. I never had any issues with it, although admittedly I don't put it through it's paces like I do with my current bodies.

Hi, I've bought a refurbed D3000 and a D90 and an SB600 flash and have had good luck with all. Would I do it again, YES. You can save quite a piece of change doing this. I used the same store and got excelent service from them. Go for it, you won't be sorry.

I've often wondered the same. I've been looking to buy a 70-300 AF-S VR to replace my tiny little 55-200 AF-S VR. The refurb price on the 70-300 is $399 vs. spending $599 for one that is brand new. That's quite a big difference and if the lens is low on wear and high on performance, it seems kinda silly to pay the extra $200 for a new one.

I bought a refurbished D40 approx 1 1/2 years ago through my local retail camera store. Had only 120 shutter accuations; looked and handled like new. All accessories (battery, charger, mauals, etc.) were new. 90 day factory refurburbished warranty. Never have had an issue with it, and last year neither did my daughter borrowing it....3,000 shots during a month-long South America-Europe trip. Would buy refurbished again without hesitation.

You can always purchase an extended warranty for a refurbished unit.

I also purchased a factory refurb camera from Cameta Camera on ebay. It was an auction. The camera was a D60 and it came with 90 day Nikon warranty, the kit lens, and all of the packaging and accessories. I have had zero problems. I don't know the shutter count as I never bothered to check when I received the camera. It was purpoted to be a factory demo. It certainly looked, felt, and handled like new. I also purchased a 55-200mm VR lens the same way and also had zero problems.

In general I buy a good portion of my equipment used or refurbished if there is a big enough difference in the price to make it worth taking the chance. I have purchased the refurbs mentioned as well as used gear on ebay from stores and individual sellers along with local used gear on craigslist. So far so good. Buy from reputable stores and give your equipment the once over.

Also have a refurbished 18-55VR that came with the D40 and I purchased a 55-200VR factory refurbushed for $100.00 Both work flawlessly. The only new lens I own is a 35mm f/1.8.

Yes, I purchased a refurbished Nikon D3000 body for $310 from B&H in June. It arrived in a special printed Nikon "refurbished" box. Every thing was neatly packaged as if new. Everything looked new and worked like new without any signs of use. The only thing that was missing was the 1 year warranty, (just a 90 day warranty instead).

The camera works great and no problems so far. Not even any dust or oil on the sensor! :)
Here is a shot taken with the refurbed D3000.

Best regards,
Jon

In fact, here's the D50 in use (subject's hands), and D7000 in use (my hands). It went to Brazil and Japan and back and had no issues.

I bought my kid a refurb D5000 + lens kit last autumn. Indistinguishable from brand new when opened and has worked perfectly since.

I just got a factory-refurb 70-300 VR from Adorama for $380, and I am delighted with it. But, because of the stories I've heard about problems with the VR developing after a year or two on this lens, I opted for a 7 year 3rd party warranty for another $27 through Adorama. It was still a good savings, and the peace of mind was worth the few extra bucks for me.

I bought a refurb D5000 from Cameta in May, could not be happier. Had 1 shutter activation when I got it. Was brand new, and came with everything. I just bought a refurb 70-300VR from them off their ebay auctions for 360 shipped, came with all the accessories, looks brand spankin new. I am a crusader for the refurbished cause, alot of the electronics in my house are refurbished, purchased over the span of 10+ years, and all are fantastic.

got my D7000 refurbished with a 18-105vr lens also refurbished. both like new, new pieces that perform like new. couldnt tell a dif. I bought the body refurbished because it wasnt on stock at the time last month. saved 30 dollars wich i dont care really.

I also purchased a d5000 from cameta in may for cheap... I would highly reccomend it to save money.. cameta also incledes nikons 90 day warranty and a 1 year warranty.. they also auction through ebay.. nikon dan was lucky with 1 click mine had 19...

I purchased a factory demo D40x and the two kit lenses (18-55 VR & 55-200 VR) both factory demos from Cameta about 2 1/2 years ago and everything is working flawlessly. The camera had 150 on the shutter count.

Just MASH that shutter button.

D5000 and a D200 plus a couple lens, no problems.

If the price was right. Cameta Camera sells Nikon refurbs, and adds 9 months warranty to the Nikon 3 months.

I ran through all the posts, and the answer is an overwhelming - Yes! That's my answer, too.

I have a refurbed Nikon D90 I bought in May at KEH.com, and it's perfect and at least as good as the one I bought new in 2009.

The only caveat is to be sure it was refurbished by Nikon and comes in the Nikon refurb box. There are other outfits doing refurbs, and I don't trust them.
