Given that I'm about to purchase a D5100 tomorrow and have been reading (and viewing) all the bad press about the D5100 not having any manual controls in video mode, could that just be a matter of an upgrade in the software, or does it go deeper than that? I'm not really concerned enough to delay my purchase, but does anyone have any opinions as to whether that will be addressed since it seems to be a major oversight on Nikons part.

I'm not familiar with video on the D5100, but from what I've read in general about DSLR video ... video isn't "there" yet.

I think it might be like a dancing chicken. It's not that the chicken dances well that is impressive ... it's that it can dance at all.

Take a look at what bythom.com has to say about the state of dslr video:

(search for the phrase "What About Video?" for the relevant section.)

don't buy the 5100 for video, because it sucks for video. buy it if you want a great little Nikon with excellent pic IQ.

Nikon giveth (1080p @ 30fps) and Nikon taketh away (no manual exposure in video) ... Nikon have been very careful to keep the features in the consumer cams at the appropriate level. The D5100 has the D7000 sensor and the nice articulating LCD, which makes it the best snapshooter anywhere at any price. But they took away a lot of the features that enthusiasts want, steering those people to the extremely well featured D7000.

Classic strategy ...

And as far as I know, they rarely throw new features into firmware ... except of course when the s model comes out and they tweak the original model to match where software is the only difference (e.g. D70, D70s) ...
