I'm very excited.

Any tips on what new things to try with the swivel screen? I've never had a camera with one before and I think this could open up a whole new way of shooting for me, (will definitely be useful with the tripod).

I remember when I brought up the swivel screen on these forums before (a few years back) and everyone said, "oh no... that's something for babies" and now everyone wants it ahaha.

PS.

I just completed a photo blog/website with Wordpress. I was wondering what y' all thought of it. I need to upgrade the "equipment" section soon. Most shots were taken with my XSi, although some new ones were with the t3i.

Oh yeah. One question. Does this Auto Lighting Optimizer affect Raw shots? What's the difference between it and Highlight Tone Priority? I'm confused about this new feature.

ALO does not effect the RAW information. It is just a JPEG conversion style setting. As such, it will be DPP's default when you open the photo there but it has no actual effect on the RAW information.

Highlight tone priority (D+) is different because it causes the camera to under-expose by 1 Ev and then processes the JPEG accordingly. The RAW file for ISO 200 D+ = ISO 100 @ -1 Ev , except of course that DPP and other RAW processors know to treat it differently by default.

Any time I am working outdoors in bright sunlight, I use Highlight Tone Priority.

I'm sure you'll figure out how the swivel screen is useful to you.

Personally, I would use it for some Macro work, but I can't think of what else as it is essentially impossible to both focus and compose at the same time in the LCD.

I was thinking of trying to shoot from the hip with the swivel screen. Also seems like it'd be good for crazy angle work. The focus is divorced from the composure but I think I'll be able to work with it. How do others use it?

One definite bad thing about that swivel screen is the lack of eye proximity sensor =(. I'm getting used to that though... although it seems to involve more button pushes. I think I'll have to turn off image review because the bright light of the image coming up interferes when my eye is on the viewfinder.

One new question:

Does the Peripheral Illumination Correction affect raw? I'm used to using Lightroom to do lens corrections so I don't wanna double correct something.

I believe it works exactly like it did on your XSi.

Shooting over crowds... shooting low angle photos without lying on the floor... shooting down into a bird's nest and being able to see and frame the shot... You can leave the camera sitting on your lap and use the LCD folded down to take pictures without anyone noticing. Or, how about turning it around facing forward and taking your own portrait while seeing yourself in the LCD?

It's a very useful feature. I never once thought about using it for macros when I had the same kind of thing on my FZ50.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So is a gnat.

Sometimes it is nice to flip the screen around just to avoid scratches to your LCD when handling etc...

I find the feature most useful when working with a tripod or awkward angle shots (really low to the ground mostly).

I do most of my macro work in Live View. I haven't tried it yet with the swivel screen, but I'm looking forward to having the monitor at whatever angle I want.

I've missed a swivel screen since the days of my Pro1 (and earlier swivel-screen models). I'll be getting a T3i (or successor) and look forward to using that feature. You'll find that it's very useful in many situations.
