Ricoh(Pentax) FF - issues and strategical opportunities

Hmm..an expert :) part 2

So, if Pentax made a 5D2 type camera, it would cost them more overall, and the cost per unit would be greater as well. They would be forced to charge more for both camera and lenses to make a profit, not less and it would impact their ability to expand more profitable lines.

Which is obviously quite logical - I agree.

Why, apart from a handful of Pentax users, would anyone buy a Pentax FF which costs 50% or 100% more than the equivalent Nikon of Canon? Since most Pentax users seem to want to pay $1500, there is not much scope for making a profit here.

Well Pentax produce times less 645D cameras than the the producers and tehy do cost 50% or 100% LESS. Your statements are unsupported speculations. And why would anyone buy a FF Pentax is a large marketing question which is far beyond your personal opinion.

The 645D has a completely different set of economics simply because Pentax can charge a great deal more for it and because it competes in a different, specialist niche space where 5 year old AF technology is actually quite advanced, movie mode is not required, 1.5FPS is more than enough and continuous AF is not really much of an issue.

Well economics are really the same as per each product the 645D sells quite less than the competition, but unlike you presumed above it is FAR cheaper than the competition.

They could reuse many components from the K5 (controls, firmware, AF) and the old 645 (mirror box, shutter etc) leaving them only with the sensor package to worry about. No licensing issues either. They also have stocks of most of the old 645 lenses (and many Japanese customer still used 645 film cameras) so only a couple of new lenses were really needed to get the ball rolling.

The 645D was developed from scratch as it doesn't use older 645 or 67 parts as you wrongly assumed.
A FF camera will also use many of the K-5 parts (canon 5D and 7D do)

A FF camera may use the K-5 firmware, the 645D shows how capable are the already developed processor and the firmware.

And a FF Pentax will equally well benefit from the available FF Pentax lenses (and these are available in huge numbers). I don't see any licensing issues being a problem or a large cost or time consuming event for Pentax.

The 645D is not selling with old film lenses held on stock

All growth is in the mid market. All competing manufacturers are concentrating there and margins are still achievable. At the same time they are forcing manufacturing costs down all the time hence the upsurge in new CSCs. That is where Pentax needs to go for growth, not FF. Their competitors are Olympus, Fuji, Pansonic, Samsung and Sony right now, not Canon and Nikon.

All the companies in the industry compete at different levels.

And the enthusiast level camera segment (which you called mid market although this is a totally different term) sales are fuelled by the image of the brand and the available Pro models.

Once they have a more stable financial base and a larger manufacturing and development capability, THEN they may be able to afford to make a FF camera for a decent price. Chicken and egg.

Once again - I never wrote that a possible FF form Pentax/Ricoh will be a cheap one.
And which of them appeared first - the chicken or the egg?

I am dreaming to enhance the sensitivity of my own perception and not the sensitivity of my camera's sensor...
