That has very little to do with the cost of production, that's because Leica's business model depends on selling Veblen Goods .

Getting rid of the AF will actually increase the cost, as they would sell very few such cameras. It's a recipe for disaster, IMO.

I may actually agree here - what's being described would be fun and interesting, but probably wouldn't sell as well as a standard small FF DSLR with modern/fast AF, even if it were less expensive. A FF sensor alone still adds $300-$600 to the cost of a DSLR.
