Btw, the first photo is nice but it looks like either the focus was off (unlikely) or there was trouble trying to support the lens. Neeyon, have you considered a decent carbon fibre monopod. I find them to be life-savers (and muscle savers) when doing walk-around with one of the beasts.

Probably a combination of fairly heavy crop, underexposed, as well as hand-held from a boat, not to mention possible user error

Monopod sounds like an interesting idea for sure
