It's true that lugging around a 100-400 is a bit of a chore. And if 200mm or 300mm is all you need, then the 70-200 f/4L IS (of which I own a copy) or 70-300L are better choices. But if you're serious about shooting wildlife, you really need 400mm or more. Something I learned the hard way after trying to shoot wildlife with my 70-200L and a 1.4x TC. Bought the 100-400L, but kept the 70-200L because it's so sharp and so much nicer to use when I don't need 400mm.
